May Outing
The Event:
Visit to the Tswaing meteorite crater. Also known as the Pretoria Salt Pan, this is one of the largest and best-preserved impact craters in the world.
When:
 Sunday 16 May 2004
Meet at Visitors' Centre by 8h30
Details:
The idea is to get there early while it is still cool enough to walk, have a guided trail of the area, then lunch and socialising in the picnic area. This means a day outing, from which we can return at a reasonable hour.
We have booked a trail guide, who can conduct a crowd of 10 to 30 people. This is very interesting; you will learn about fauna, flora, ecology, local history, geology and more.
If we do not have enough people for the guided tour, we will have to chip in. If we have too many, then some will have to go it alone unless there is another guide available at that time.
Those not wishing to do the whole hike, or who wish to proceed at their own pace, need not join the guided tour. You can just go to the crater and back, choosing the trail you like and the level of physical effort appropriate to yourself.
If you arrive late, you will miss the guided tour, but can still see the crater and so on.
All participants are responsible for themselves. It's pretty safe, but realise it is still the bush. It would be better for people not joining the guided tour to form one or more small groups, rather than walk the bush as individuals.
You can bring friends/family/etc., but preference in the guided group will be given to TACC members. Not recommended for small children.
There is a maintenance access road into the crater (no private vehicles allowed) which presents an "easy" access for the not-so-fit. But it is a deceptively steep climb out, so there is no shame in taking it slowly.
The plan of action can be firmed up at the April meeting. (Some may wish to form lift clubs.)
What to bring:
 Waterbottle for the hike.
Sunscreen, bug repellent, hat, sensible walking shoes.
Packed lunch / picnic / braai requirements, as you see fit.
Camping chairs & umbrellas would be useful.
 Binoculars, camera...
About R15 per head and a few bucks extra for firewood, booklets, cold drinks, etc.
How to get there:
Cellphone reception in the area is reasonable. You could call if you get lost. (Get appropriate numbers from the above website in advance.)
