ScopeX is a Telescope & Astronomy Expo held annually on Astronomy Day by the Johannesburg

Centre of the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA).

The main activities are:

- Talks in the auditorium;
- Science Shows throughout the day;
- Displays of self-made and commercial telescopes and related items;
- Looking through telescopes during the day and evening;
- Amateur Telescope Making exhibit including mirror grinding demonstrations;
- Workshops for new or potential telescope owners;
- Learn how to build a Newtonian telescope;
- Come submit your photo in the Astrophotography Competition – great prizes to win
- Star party from 6pm (weather permitting). Tour the night sky. Bring a picnic and join us on the lawns.

This year our special overseas guest Richard Berry will be involved in the adjudication of the Astrophotography Competition. As former editor of Telescope Making and Astronomy magazines, and author of notable books on the subject, he brings a global perspective. As usual, the main criteria for judging include innovation, ambitiousness of the project and quality of workmanship. The judges may select some component, not necessarily the entire instrument, as being worthy of comment or award.
